Mia Mireia Uusorg takes U20 World Athletics Championships silver
Estonian multi-sport athlete Mia Mireia Uusorg won heptathlon silver at the ongoing Under-20 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Uusorg scored 5,961 points across the seven events: 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter sprint, long jump, javelin throw, 800 meters.
This tally was just 138 points short of her U20 PB, also a domestic record, placing her second behind Finland's Enni Virjonen (6,214 points) in Oregon. Switzerland's Anna Pfister took bronze.
"The emotions are still at their peak! I was afraid after the high jump that everything was lost, but I made a comeback," Uusorg said of her performance. "I came to the competitions with expectations and hopes that I would do all my things. It didn't go as planned, but in the end all the cards played in my favor."
On day one, Uusorg set a 100-meter hurdles PB of 13.71, put in a high jump of 1.63, improved her personal best in the shot put to 11.33, and ran the 200 meters in 24.27.
On day two she clocked 6.23 in the long jump, threw the javelin 45.30, and improved her PB in the 800 meters to a time of 2:13.90, clinching silver.
"I'm definitely pleased with the shot put. I've struggled with it a lot in various multi-events that I've done before. The high jump was definitely below any expectations, but sometimes it's like that. That's how multi-events are. I'm also extremely pleased with the 800-meter run. Running a personal best in these conditions was the biggest success," Uusorg added.
From the other Estonian competitors, Annika Põlluaas finished 21st with a total of 4,616 points after failing to post a score in the long jump.
In the boys' categories, Henri Apri advanced to the pole vault final, having cleared his qualifying height of 5.25 on his third attempt. Martin Plak finished 17th with a vault of 4.95.
The Estonian foursome of Tristan Konso, Pia Lauren Matsalu, Dmitri Petrogradov, and Miia Ott failed to make the mixed relay finals, finishing 18th in the heats with a time of 43.69.
Petrogradov had set a new U20 domestic 100-meter record earlier in the meeting.
The U20 World Athletics Championships run to Sunday.
