As the previous government was already falling apart following Rõivas’ losing a vote of no confidence against him, the work group still got to present its final report. The report repeated statements heard before, from businesses as well as economists, calling to get as many people as possible to participate in the labor market, make it easier to hire foreign talent, improve life-long learning and training, make innovation the main driver of growth, digitize the economy, and improve leadership skills as well as the business environment Estonia offers to companies. What exactly would have to be done for the work of the experts to have a practical impact at the time remained unclear.

In April, the government of Prime Minister Jüri Ratas (Center) decided to create a political committee for economic growth consisting of ministers in the government. The committee in turn will appoint work groups corresponding to different areas and economic sectors.

According to government media advisor Ave Tampere, the goal of the new committee is to improve the competitiveness of the Estonian economy. The first meeting is set for June.

The work of the previous group under Raasuke had come to its conclusion with the introduction of its report, Tampere said. The recommendations made in it may also become part of the new committee’s work.

“The task of the work group led by Erkki Raasuke was to identify actions that would help increase the speed of Estonia’s economic growth. The report is an important part of the work of the committee for economic growth, where a discussion of the recommendations is planned to take place,” Tampere added.
