Photos: Tartu's Kompanii tänav gets pedestrian-friendly summer makeover

A central Tartu street is now a pedestrianized public space and will be so for the whole summer.
Part of Kompanii tänav, an offshoot of Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats), is now closed to traffic, including for parking, its main function during usual times.
Several cafés, the Tartu City Library, the Tartu Art Museum, and the Elektriteater are situated on Kompanii Street, but the city government says the regular spatial layout did not encourage the public to spend time or linger on the street. The revamped street solution aims to address this, making it livelier and supporting the surrounding area's cultural life and local businesses.
The upgrade includes seating areas, greenery in keeping with the time of year, bike racks, and outdoor café areas.
The street was closed to traffic on the stretch from Town Hall Square to Küütri tänav, one block to the north, on May 7, and only reopens on October 1.
Access for emergency services and service vehicles is ensured, the city administration says. Vehicles with a disabled parking permit can park in the taxi stand area along Vabaduse pst, the main thoroughfare which runs alongside the Emajõgi River and parallel to Kompanii.
