Gallery: TalTech summer production revisits Tallinn student life in 1968
TalTech's summer production "Now I Study in Mustamäe" takes audiences on a romp through Tallinn in 1968, when students navigated dreams, love and life under Soviet rule.
The story follows Kaarel, a talented young automation and telemechanics major from the countryside, and his dormitory roommates as they grapple with timeless issues: how to pursue their dreams, find love and achieve success while remaining true to themselves.
Their personal struggles unfold against the backdrop of a turbulent era: Soviet restrictions and KGB surveillance in sharp contrast with the Prague Spring, Western rock and roll and the breakneck pace of technological change.
Written by Andra Teede and produced by the Tallinn University of Technology Alumni Association, "Now I Study in Mustamäe" is based on firsthand alumni memories of the time.
'Their dreams were no smaller'
Director Veiko Tubin said the theme of freedom was what drew him to the story.
"These young folks lived in times where they had fewer choices than people do today, but their dreams were no smaller," Tubin said, noting that despite the restrictions they faced, students back then still managed to have fun and do groundbreaking science.
He added that the production is not just about one graduating class or even university, but about people trying to find their place in the world.
"Now I Study in Mustamäe" opens Friday night in the TalTech courtyard, with performances running rain or shine.
The cast includes Jass Kalev Mäe, Maris Nõlvak, Theodor Tabor, Karl Robert Saaremäe, Oskar Punga, Egon Nuter, Kadri Lepp, Martin Mill, Piret Krumm, Ingrid Pappel, Kristjan Knight, Iko-Erik Uustalu, Sander Kõiv, Johanna Poll, Mia-Marleen Tõnis and Kevin Räim.
