Paper: Man stabbed in central Tallinn later dies in hospital

A man who was found late on Friday night in central Tallinn seriously injured from stab wounds later passed away in hospital, evening paper Õhtuleht reports. A suspect was arrested around 24 hours later.
The incident took place on Mere pst in central in Tallinn close to midnight Friday, July 12, and the emergency center (Häirekeskus) was notified of person found at the tram stop who had received injuries in Tallinn.
Paramedics transported the victim, a 34-year-old who had suffered stab wounds, to a hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries about an hour later, Õhtuleht writes.
Madis Allak, operations manager at the Police and Border Guard Board's (PPA) Northern Prefecture, told the paper that officers had been gathering evidence from the scene and interviewing witnesses.
"All the exact circumstances of this incident are still being clarified, and the police continue to work to determine what exactly happened last night at the Mere pst tram stop, and who might have committed the act," he said.
A criminal investigation has also been initiated to clarify the details of the incident, while the PPA asks witnesses to provide any information by calling 112.
Delfi: Suspect arrested around 24 hours after incident
Portal Delfi reported Monday that the PPA had detained a suspect, also a 34-year-old male, while the Prosecutor's Office on Monday requested his full arrest, and criminal proceedings have been initiated under the homicide section of the Penal Code.
Vadim Kuperštein, a PPA spokesperson from the Northern Prefecture's homicide department, told Delfi that the suspect and victim had had a verbal altercation at the Mere pst tram stop, which "very quickly escalated" and ended up with the suspect stabbing the victim.
"What exactly caused the conflict is still being clarified," he said, adding that the suspect fled the scene after the stabbing.
Based on information obtained so far including the questioning of the suspect, the two men were strangers to each other prior to the incident.
Investigators had spent 24 hours working to apprehend the suspect, starting from the notification to the alarm center.
This included collecting physical evidence at the scene of the crime, interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance camera footage and following up on tip-offs.
"Thanks to the cameras in the public space, we managed to arrest the suspect near his residence, a little less than 24 hours after committing the act," Kuperštein told Delfi.
